If Water Could Speak acknowledges that water may have a thing or two to say about Ebbing & Flowing.
Water has agency - it affects us - it is something 'other' than us & yet is at the core of us.
Water holds our memories, shapes our lives, is intertwined with our ability to survive, thrive & navigate our emotional lives.
Water soothes, calms, can destroy our homes or break a drought.
Water is imbued with our most cherished & terrifying memories.
Mythologies & stories from every culture in the world & throughout time, speak of the power of water to transform, hold our memories, sooth our grief & cleanse our souls.
If we accept that water is a part of us & we a part of it - we are kin.
May we cherish & honour water.
Nurturing a relationship with water can support our emotional & ecological well being.
If we speak with water like a dear old friend / guide / ancestor / kin & listen to the replies.
If water is speaking to us - what is it saying?
We have gathered images. videos & sounds of our conversations, intra-actions
& poignant moments with water.
Diffractive co-created media arts works, where the collaborative process is as important as sharing the outcomes. Where we viscerally experienced the notion that we create nothing alone. We collaborated with each other, with water & the creative container formed by sharing our experiences with water.

A Virtual Artist in Residence.
I was planning to do a 'normal' artist in residence in the North Midlands area of Western Australia in December 2021. Between the time of accepting the residency and late November, my chronic health condition had deteriorated leaving me wondering how on earth I would be able to travel and run workshops around the North Midlands area in the heat of summer. I informed David Bowman-Bright at the North Midlands Project that, regrettably, I had to cancel my residency due to ill health. He responded by giving me some further time to consider & to see how my health ebbed & flowed. By early January, after much discussion & emails, we decided that a Virtual Artist in Residence was possible. I have much gratitude for the flexibility & inclusiveness shown by David & the North Midlands Project.
Through a diverse array of digital communications, I built some wonderful relationships. The most poignant & powerful collaboration was with a local teacher, Shiona Herbert and her students at Coorow Primary.
Between 18 February to the end of Term 1 we had many conversations, messages, emails, video updates, padlet chats, Mighty Networks (like facebook but private) exchanges, zoom workshops, phone calls & text messages. We allowed the process to have a life of its own... shifting fluidly with the interests & joy of the students; from singing along to the song I wrote, initially inspired by their poetry & videos, to writing black out poetry and creating GIFS and videos for a Living Digital Mosaic. We also collaborated on this interview & home school activity.
The Community Zoom Workshops & private online community (hosted by Mighty Networks) generated a deluge of creative material from diverse members of the community. You can explore these works via the Interactive page or under the Water Memories drop down menu above.
A sincere thank you to the North Midlands Project & everyone who came on the virtual journey with me!
